「私はスミスです」と「私がスミスです」は、どう違うのですか？

　いきなりだが、日本語を勉強している外国人にこんな質問をされたとしよう。「は」と「が」の違い。文法の授業で習った気もする。しかし、普段そんなことは意識せずに使っているわけで……はたして、どう答えるのが正しいのだろうか。

　日本語の文法に基づけば、「○○は××です」の場合、「○○」部分には話し手と聞き手が了解済みの古い情報が入り、「××」に新しい情報が入る、という説明になる。これは「何」「誰」のような疑問を示す単語を用いて会話文にしてみるとわかりやすい。

　Aさん「あの人は誰ですか」
　Bさん「（あの人は）スミスさんです」

　このとき、「○○」にあたる「あの人」は言わなくても通じている。換言すれば「スミスさん」こそがAさんの聞きたい（Bさんの伝えたい）新情報であるというわけだ。

　「○○が××です」という場合はその逆で、「○○」が新情報になる。これも会話にしてみると、

　Aさん「誰がスミスさんですか」
　Bさん「私がスミスです」

　となり、ここでは「スミスさん」なる人物を話題にしていることは双方が了承済みで、Bさんの発信した「私」がAさんにとっての新情報である。

　日本語が母語であれば子供でも「が」と「は」を無意識に区別しているが、こうして筋道を立てて考えてみると、我々日本人は何が新情報で何がそうでないかを瞬時に判断し、それを助詞ひとつで表現していることがわかる。
